The Convention of the NASO Community America Concluded Successfully on 23st March 2024.

Over the past 20 years, despite representing human rights advocacy, the Nepali community in America has still faced an environment where their roles remain marginalized. However, with the aim of continuously promoting social justice including equal opportunities, social equality, combating caste discrimination, and violence against women, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Caste Base was celebrated on March 23, 2024, in the state of Maryland, USA! As part of the esteemed guest list, the Honorable Consul General for America, Mr. Prem Raja Mahat, and the First Dalit Female Justice of Nepal, Honorable Man Kumari participated in the program as special guests. All guests expressed their support for raising voices against racial and caste discrimination and emphasized the need to uphold justice worldwide.

Additionally, during the second session of the program, an assembly program of the NASO Community in America was conducted. The session was chaired by three members of the election committee, Mr. Manohar Bamrel and Mr. Hikmat BK, while the Chief Election Officer, Mr. Ram Krishna Lakandri expressed his consent with his signature. From this session, the Central Executive Committee for the term 2024-2027 was elected Mr. Ravilal Sunar as the President with executive committee includes Senior Vice-President Mr. Tirtha Pariyar Sewa, Vice-President Mr. Durga Bishwokarma, Ms. Reemaya Nepali, Ms. Sumitra Pariyar, and Mr. Bhim Narayan BK. General Secretary Mr. Rajan Sunar, Treasure Mr. Gyanendra Gahatraj Assistant Treasurer Ms. Sonika Chunara, Secretary Mr. Raju Ramdam, Assistant Secretary Mr. Krishna Bishwakarma and central members are Mr. Narayan Gayak, Mr. Tam B.K., Ms. Kalpana BK, Mr. Rajesh Rajak, Mr. Vijay Ghimire, and Mr. Kamal Pariyar were selected.

Furthermore, six individuals were honored for their contributions to human rights, social justice, women’s rights, advocacy through media, and senior artists. They are Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar, veteran journalist and social worker Mr. Pradeep Pariyar Thapa, the first Dalit district judge, Honorable Man Kumari, social and human rights activist Ms. Saraswati Nepali, stage performer Ms. Pavitra Rasaili, and choreographer Mr. Shiva BK.
Overall, the program aimed to advocate for justice through legal means, elevate the roles of senior artists, and recognize outstanding contributions.

End all forms of discrimination based on caste, race, work and decent by building collective efforts and engaging individuals, families, communities, and agencies at macro and micro level.

VISION

‘A world free of prejudice and discrimination where everyone is valued and treated with equal rights, dignity and respect’.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of NASO Community, USA are to:

  • Co-ordinate and collaborate with like-minded organizations globally including UN agencies, government bodies on minority rights, human rights and social justice.
  • Implement interventions to fight against racial, gender, work, descent and caste-based discriminations through advocacy, awareness and sensitization campaign in peaceful means.
  • Preserve and promote Nepalese language, arts and cultures in diaspora community through different community engagement efforts.
  • Engage in research and publication on pertinent issues for advocacy interventions.
  • Provide humanitarian assistance to the needy community people.

WHAT WE DO

Coordination and Collaboration:

NASO has been coordinating and collaborating strategically with like-minded organizations globally. It has been working as the coordinating organization for marking international day for the elimination of racial discrimination. In 2021, it was jointly marked by ADWAN, ICDR, Global Forum, Alliance for Justice, and PDRC International. NASO has been coordinating with other organizations in Canada, Europe and Middle East and Nepal.

Advocacy and awareness:

NASO believe that advocacy needs a consistent efforts and engagement on the issues and actors at different levels for positive changes in the lives of people. Hence, it engages in such efforts by organizing discourse like talk among key actors, intellectuals, academicians, activists and leaders on concurrent issues. It has been lobbying and expressing its concern to the government bodies of Nepal on the issues of human rights and social justice particularly on in the incidents of caste-based discrimination and untouchability through the Embassy of Nepal in the US and by collaborating with organizations and individuals working in Nepal.

Humanitarian assistance:

NASO Community believes that rights-based interventions be coupled with need-based support in order to relieve affected people for short term and enable them to benefit from policy advocacy. NASO has been providing humanitarian assistance to the needy, minority and Dalit community people since its inception in the cases of pandemic and other incidences. For such interventions, it collaborates with likeminded organizations around the globe for greater impact.

Promotion of Nepalese culture and heritage:

NASO support efforts to protect, develop and enhance positive Nepalese cultures in diaspora community and the society through organizing different cultural events and community awareness activities against race, caste and descent-based discrimination.

Research and publication:

NASO engage in research and publication on pertinent issues for policy advocacy interventions. It collaborates with other likeminded organizations and individuals in order to carry out such research and publication. “Rukum Caste-based Massacre Structural Insensitivity, a collection of select articles” is a recent publication.
